How to Get Rid of Dust Mites: A Room-by-Room Guide
The wash cycle most people run does almost nothing, and the fix comes down to one number on the dial.

Dust mites depend on warmth, a food supply of shed skin, and humid air. Take away any one and the colony weakens, which is why the whole plan targets all three in turn.
- Strip and wash bedding in a hot water wash
Wash sheets, pillowcases, and duvet covers at 60°C (140°F). Cooler cycles clean the fabric but leave most live mites behind, so the temperature setting is what does the real work.
- Encase the mattress and pillows in allergen-proof covers
Zip the mattress and pillows into tightly woven allergen-proof covers. This seals the deep reservoir of mites you cannot wash out and cuts off the skin-flake food supply feeding them.
- Lower indoor humidity below 50 percent
Keep relative humidity under 50 percent with a dehumidifier or air conditioning, tracked on a hygrometer. Dry air dehydrates mites over time in a way no surface cleaning can match.
- Vacuum carpets and upholstery with a HEPA vacuum
Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture weekly with a HEPA-filter vacuum. Standard machines can blow fine allergen particles back into the air instead of trapping them.
- Freeze or heat-treat soft toys you cannot hot-wash
Seal delicate soft toys in a bag and freeze them for a day, or run them through a hot dryer, to kill mites in items that a 60°C wash would ruin.
- Declutter the soft furnishings around the room
Cut back on the fabric that collects dust: spare cushions, heavy drapes, and bedroom floor rugs. Fewer soft surfaces mean fewer reservoirs for mites to settle into.
- Set a maintenance schedule that keeps them gone
Lock the routine into a rhythm: hot-wash bedding and HEPA-vacuum weekly, watch the hygrometer, and rotate soft furnishings through the freezer or a deep clean seasonally.
A weekly wash on your usual warm setting leaves most of the mites in your sheets alive and comfortable. The temperature that actually kills them runs hotter than an everyday cycle, and getting that one detail right is the difference between a chore that feels productive and one that thins the population for real.
Dust mites are microscopic relatives of spiders. They eat the flakes of dead skin that collect in bedding and upholstery, and they do well in the warm, damp conditions a slept-in bed gives them. Their droppings, rather than the mites themselves, carry the proteins that trigger a dust mite allergy.
The plan below runs in order for a reason. Each step either removes mites or takes away something they rely on, and doing them in sequence stops you from dragging dirt back onto a surface you just cleaned. So if you want to know how to get rid of dust mites without wasting your effort, start at the top and work down.
Understand what dust mites need to survive
Before you touch a single sheet, it helps to know what you are up against. Dust mites cannot drink. They pull water vapor straight from the air through their skin, which makes the humidity in a room the one factor that decides whether a colony grows or dies off. They also need food, mostly the dead skin cells that people and pets shed, plus the warmth of a lived-in home.
That gives you three levers. Heat kills them outright. Their food supply you can cut back. Their moisture you can take away. Bedding sits at the middle of all three, which is why it comes first. Work outward from the bed to the rest of the room and you avoid dragging allergen back onto surfaces you have already handled.
Strip and wash bedding in a hot water wash
Pull every fabric thing off the bed: sheets, pillowcases, duvet covers, and any decorative throws. Run them through a hot water wash at 60°C (140°F) or higher.
The temperature is not up for debate, and the reason is worth spelling out. In a controlled laundry study, water at 55°C or above killed every dust mite, while cooler washes left large numbers alive [1]. A typical 40°C cycle rinses away dirt and some allergen but leaves the living population mostly intact. If a fabric cannot take the heat, a spell in the freezer (covered later) or a hot tumble dry afterward helps close the gap.
Strip and wash bedding weekly. Mites move back in fast once you sleep on fresh sheets again, so this becomes the backbone of everything else.
Encase the mattress and pillows in allergen-proof covers
A mattress is the biggest mite reservoir in the house, and you cannot put it through the wash. So you seal it instead. Encase the mattress and every pillow in allergen-proof covers, sometimes sold as dust-mite or barrier covers, and zip them fully shut.
These covers work both ways. The tight weave keeps the mites already living deep in the mattress from reaching the surface, and it blocks the fresh skin cells you shed each night from feeding them. Put the covers on after a hot wash of the bedding, so you are sealing a clean surface instead of trapping allergen against your body.
Wipe the covers down when you change the sheets, and run them through the same hot cycle a few times a year.
Lower indoor humidity below 50 percent
Because mites take on water straight from the air, dry air is quietly lethal to them. Aim to keep relative humidity below 50 percent. A small hygrometer, the kind that costs a few dollars, tells you where you actually stand instead of where you assume you are.
Research on humidity control found that keeping conditions consistently dry held mite populations down, and that short humid spells from cooking, bathing, or drying laundry indoors could undo the effect if they pushed levels back above the line [2]. A dehumidifier in the bedroom, or air conditioning through the humid months, does most of the work. Venting the bathroom and kitchen and drying wet laundry outside keeps those moisture spikes from creeping back.
This lever is slow rather than instant, but it is the one that stops populations rebuilding between cleanings.
Vacuum carpets and upholstery with a HEPA vacuum
Carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture hold both mites and the fine dust that carries their allergen. Vacuum them weekly with a machine that has a HEPA filter.
The filter matters more than the suction. Mite allergen rides on very small particles, and a vacuum without proper filtration can push some of them straight back into the room. HEPA-grade filtration is built to trap particles down to that size. In a clinical trial, HEPA air purifiers running in patients’ bedrooms cut airborne dust mite allergen and eased allergy symptoms, which tells you that catching these fine particles rather than stirring them up makes a measurable difference [3].
Go slowly over each patch so the machine has time to pull dust up from deep in the pile, and give extra attention to the sides of the mattress and the seams of the sofa.
Freeze or heat-treat soft toys you cannot hot-wash
Plush toys, decorative cushions, and other delicates often cannot survive a 60°C wash, yet they harbor mites just like bedding does. Two workarounds handle them.
Seal the item in a bag and put it in the freezer for at least 24 hours. Sustained cold kills the mites, though it leaves the allergen behind, so follow the freeze with a gentle wash and rinse where the fabric allows. A run through a hot clothes dryer also reaches temperatures that kill mites, and it is often kinder to a stuffed toy than hot water is.
A child’s favorite toys, the ones that share a pillow every night, are worth putting on a regular rotation through the freezer alongside the weekly wash.
Declutter the soft furnishings around the room
Every soft surface in a room is possible mite habitat. The more throws, cushions, heavy curtains, and rugs you keep, the more places there are to clean and the more reservoirs you leave sitting untouched between sessions.
In the bedroom especially, thin things out. Swap heavy drapes for blinds or washable light curtains. Cut the pile of decorative cushions down to the few you will actually launder. Where you can, pick a bare floor over wall-to-wall carpet, since a mopped hard floor holds a fraction of the allergen a rug does and takes seconds to clean.
Whatever stays should be something you can wash hot or wipe down without a second thought.
Set a maintenance schedule that keeps them gone
None of this holds without a rhythm, because mites come back the moment conditions let them. A simple schedule keeps the population from climbing again.
Weekly, strip and hot-wash the bedding and run the HEPA vacuum over carpets and upholstery. Check the hygrometer often enough to catch humidity drifting upward, and adjust the dehumidifier or ventilation before it settles in. Every few weeks, rotate soft toys and cushions through the freezer or a hot dry. A few times a year, wash the allergen-proof covers on a hot cycle and give curtains and rugs a deeper clean.
Think of it as upkeep rather than a one-time purge. The bed earns the most attention, and the rest of the room follows the same logic on a longer loop.
Getting rid of dust mites is less about one heroic clean and more about denying them the three things they live on: warmth, food, and moisture. The hot wash and the freezer handle the mites you can reach directly. The allergen-proof covers and the humidity control handle the ones you cannot, by sealing them off and drying out the air they depend on. The HEPA vacuum keeps the fine allergen from circulating while you work.
Relief tends to lag a few weeks behind the cleaning, since the droppings already worked into fabric take time to clear even after the mites are gone. Keep to the weekly rhythm and the trend runs one way.
