The plant looked fine on Monday. By Friday, the newest leaves are speckled with pale dots and there’s a faint webbing where the stem meets the leaf.
Something moved in.
Most indoor plant problems come down to a short list of usual suspects, and each one leaves a signature. Fine webbing points one way. A black, mushy stem base points another. A dusting of white that wipes off like flour points somewhere else. Learn the signatures and you can stop guessing.
Here are the twelve you’re most likely to meet, sorted roughly by how often they show up on a windowsill. The last entry is the one that saves you the most grief, because it tells you how to sort a bug problem from a rot problem before you reach for the wrong fix. Number seven is the one people water their plants straight into.
Spider mites
The classic sign is stippling: tiny pale or yellow speckles scattered across the top of the leaf, as if someone touched it with a needle tip a hundred times. Flip the leaf, look along the veins with a hand lens, and you may catch the mites themselves, moving specks the size of ground pepper. In a bad case, fine silk webbing strings the leaf tips and stems together.
Dry indoor air suits them. Research on the twospotted spider mite found populations grew up to three times denser under low humidity than high, and the mites developed faster in drier conditions [1]. Winter heating strips moisture from the air, which makes it prime spider mite season. Raising humidity around a susceptible plant and rinsing the leaves slows them down.
Fungus gnats
You notice the adults first: small dark flies, mosquito-shaped, drifting up from the pot when you water or walk past. They’re weak fliers and tend to hover near the soil surface rather than around your face, which sets them apart from fruit flies. The damage, though, happens underground, where the larvae feed on organic matter and fine roots.
The common thread is wet soil. Fungus gnats breed in soil that stays moist, and females prefer to lay eggs in damp, peat-rich mixes with plenty of microbial activity [2]. Let the top couple of centimeters dry between waterings and you remove the nursery. Yellow sticky cards at soil level confirm the diagnosis within a day and thin the adults while you fix the moisture.
Mealybugs
Look for what seems to be tufts of white cotton wedged into leaf axils, along stems, and in the crevices where new growth is tender. That fluff is a waxy coat over a soft, slow-moving insect. Mealybugs cluster in hidden joints and under leaves, which is why a plant can look clean from above while a colony builds underneath.
As they feed on sap, mealybugs excrete sticky honeydew, a clear sugary residue that coats nearby leaves and often grows a layer of black sooty mold. If your plant feels tacky to the touch, or the shelf beneath it does, start hunting for the source. A cotton swab dipped in alcohol dissolves the wax and kills the insect on contact, though you’ll almost always need repeat passes to catch stragglers and eggs.
Aphids
Aphids are small and pear-shaped, and they gather in dense clusters on the softest, newest growth: bud tips, flower stalks, the undersides of young leaves. Colors run from green to black to pinkish, and colonies often mix winged and wingless individuals. New leaves coming in curled, puckered, or distorted give them away even before you spot the insects.
They feed by piercing the phloem, and like mealybugs they leave sticky honeydew behind, so leaf yellowing paired with a shiny, tacky film is a strong tell. Ants patrolling a plant are another clue, since they farm aphids for that sugar. A firm spray of water knocks colonies off, and insecticidal soap handles what’s left. Check every few days, because aphids reproduce quickly and a cleared plant can repopulate in a week.
Scale insects
Scale is the pest most often mistaken for part of the plant. The insects sit still under a hard or waxy shell, looking like small brown, tan, or blackish bumps lined up along stems and leaf veins. Try to scrape one off with a fingernail. If it pops loose to reveal a soft body underneath, you have scale rather than a natural bit of bark or a leaf node.
Many scale species also produce honeydew, so the same sticky residue and sooty mold that flag aphids and mealybugs can point here too. Because the shell shields the insect, contact sprays struggle to get through. Physically removing what you can see, then treating with horticultural oil to smother the rest, works better than soap alone. Scale is slow, which buys you time, but it’s also easy to overlook until the numbers climb.
Thrips
Thrips are slender, barely visible slivers, pale yellow to dark brown, that slip into flower buds and along leaf veins. You rarely see them clearly. Instead you read the damage: silvery or bronzed streaks and patches where they’ve rasped the surface and drained the cells, often flecked with tiny black dots of excrement. Distorted new growth and deformed flowers follow.
Tapping a leaf or flower over a sheet of white paper is the fastest way to confirm them; the dislodged thrips show up as moving specks against the paper. They spread fast between plants and can carry plant viruses, so an infested plant is worth isolating. Blue sticky traps catch adults, and repeated treatment with insecticidal soap or oil helps, though thrips tucked inside buds make full control a patient job.
Root rot
This is the one you water your plant straight into. The above-ground signs are treacherous because they mimic thirst: wilting, drooping, yellowing lower leaves, a plant that looks parched even though the soil is soaked. The tell is that watering makes it worse, not better. Slide the plant out of the pot and the roots tell the truth. Healthy roots are firm and pale; rotted ones are brown or black, soft, and mushy, sometimes with a sour smell.
Overwatering is a leading cause. Waterlogged soil starves roots of oxygen and invites soil-borne pathogens like Pythium and Phytophthora, whose reproduction and infection are favored by high soil moisture [3]. The fix is drainage and restraint: let the mix dry out properly, cut away rotted roots, and repot in fresh, well-draining medium before the decay reaches the crown.
Powdery mildew
Powdery mildew shows up as a dusting of white to grayish powder on the tops of leaves, sometimes on stems and buds too. Early on it looks like a few flour-like patches you might rub away; left alone it spreads into a felted coating that yellows the leaf beneath and warps new growth. Unlike many fungal problems, it doesn’t need standing water on the leaf to take hold, and it often thrives in the humid, still air of a crowded plant shelf.
Airflow is your friend here. Spacing plants apart, running a small fan, and skipping late-day misting all cut down the stagnant conditions the fungus likes. Remove the worst-affected leaves and treat the rest while the patches are still small. Caught late, powdery mildew is stubborn, so quick action on those first flour-like spots pays off.
Leaf spot
Leaf spot is a catch-all for fungal and bacterial infections that produce discrete lesions on foliage. The spots may be brown, black, or tan, sometimes ringed with a yellow halo or a darker margin, and they often start small and round before merging into larger dead patches. Bacterial versions tend to look water-soaked and angular, boxed in by leaf veins; fungal ones are usually more circular and may show tiny fruiting structures in the center.
Moisture sitting on leaves is the usual enabler, so overhead watering and crowded, humid conditions encourage it. Remove affected leaves, avoid wetting the foliage when you water, and improve air circulation. Sterilize your scissors between cuts so you’re not carrying the infection from leaf to leaf. Most leaf spot stays cosmetic if you catch it early and deny it the wet surfaces it needs to spread.
Whitefly
Disturb an infested plant and a small cloud of tiny white moth-like insects lifts off and resettles. That flutter is the signature. Whiteflies gather on the undersides of leaves, where both the winged adults and their flat, scale-like nymphs feed on sap. Look under the leaves and you may see the immobile nymphs as pale oval specks alongside the adults.
Like other sap-feeders, whiteflies produce sticky honeydew, so the familiar tacky film and sooty mold turn up here too, along with leaf yellowing and general decline as numbers grow. Yellow sticky traps catch the adults and help you gauge the population. Because they breed quickly and the nymphs shrug off many contact sprays, treating the leaf undersides thoroughly and repeating every few days matters more than any single heavy application.
Botrytis
Botrytis, or gray mold, shows up as a fuzzy grayish-brown coating on decaying tissue: spent flowers, wilting leaves, soft stem lesions, anywhere the plant is already stressed or damaged. Brush the fuzz and it can puff into a cloud of spores. It moves fastest in cool, damp, still conditions and often gets its first foothold on dead or dying material before advancing into healthy tissue.
Good housekeeping keeps it in check. Pinch off spent blooms and fallen leaves, don’t leave water sitting on the plant, and give the air room to move. Cut out infected parts well below the visible mold and get them away from your other plants, since the spores travel easily. Damp winter windowsills with little ventilation are where gray mold most often catches houseplant growers out.
Common houseplant pests and diseases: telling one from the other
When you find common houseplant pests and diseases on the same struggling plant, one question sorts most cases quickly: is something moving, or is something rotting? Pests leave physical traces you can find with a hand lens: webbing, cottony fluff, hard bumps, moving specks, and above all sticky honeydew, which only sap-feeding insects produce. A tacky, shiny film almost always means a bug, not a fungus.
Disease leaves tissue changes instead: defined spots, powdery or fuzzy coatings, water-soaked patches, and rot that spreads from roots or stems. When leaf yellowing comes with a sticky residue, look for insects. When it comes with mushy roots or spreading lesions, think pathogen. Check the undersides of leaves and the soil line first, since that’s where both camps hide, and isolate any new find until you know which one you’re dealing with.
Run back through the list and you’ll notice the fixes cluster. Spider mites want dry air, so humidity fights them. Fungus gnats and root rot, entries two and seven, both trace back to soil that stays too wet, so the same restraint at the watering can starves both. Powdery mildew, leaf spot, and botrytis all ease off when air moves and leaves stay dry. Get watering and airflow right and you’ve quietly closed the door on more than half the problems here.
The rest comes down to looking. Turn leaves over. Check the soil line. Keep a cheap hand lens near your plants and a few yellow sticky cards in the pots. Most of these twelve are manageable when you catch them at the stippling-and-specks stage rather than the webbing-and-wilting stage. The plant that looked fine on Monday will usually tell you what’s wrong by Friday, if you know which signature to read.
